What CI and HP is a 1980 Mercruiser V8 - it's in a 1980 Slickcraft SC-200? I can't tell if the outdrive says 888 or 898? Previous owner thought it was a 350 CI. Other sites say that the 888 was made prior to 1977? Is it a 898. Any prop recommendations - need one.

Sorry to say, good chance it is a chebby. Is the distributor in the front of the engine or the rear. 888's (ford) were in the front, the chebby in the rear where you can hardly get to it. The 898 chebby was a POS 305 cid, a mere overweight shadow of it's somewhat more viable 350 counterpart.

As for the prop, you should top out at about 4800 rpm. If you are in good tune and cannot reach it, get a prop with a lower pitch. If you exceed it, get one with a higher pitch.

That 898 setup probably came with a 15 1/4" x 21 pitch. I think the OD had a 1.65 (or so) to 1 ratio.

I think the hp of the 898 was....198 hp! The 188 hp Ford would run circles around it and certainly outlast it....but then, that is just my personal preference.:p

It's probably a 305 GM......
If the dist. is in back that would confirm it......;)

Merc 888 - Engine?

Merc 888 - Engine?

My 1980 slickcraft uses an 888 outdrive. The distributor is in the rear of the engine - was rebuilt in 2004. It sounds like it is a chevy 305 at 165 hp? Could it be a 350 - hp? Where do I find the engine serial number to confirm - on the block near the carb? There is a website that lists serial numbers and engine specs for parts ordering purposes. Any help would be appreciated.

Engine Serial # to confirm prop

Engine Serial # to confirm prop

Does anyone know where the engine serial number is located on an 888 mercruiser - 1980. Need to confirm this prior to ordering a prop and maybe some other parts.

If it does not have the dist. in front it is not an 888.......
They did not make 888 after 1977....
More likely that you have an 898.....
The ID# should be on the valve cover....;)

No Serial# on valve cover

No Serial# on valve cover

I checked for a serial number on the valve cover of my 1980 mercruiser and there isn't any. The outdrive says 888 on a gold label. The engine does have a number on the block between the carb and the distributor (in the back) - the number looks like 6269797 with a 10 underneath it? I am wondering if this could be a replacement motor or if it the original?

Thanks again for your help & patience to this point.

Re: jimbo B

If I recall correctly the 888 stood for 8 cylinder and 188 hp from a 302 ford.
