MERC 1988 5.0LX /ALPHA1 GEN 1 MERCATHODE QUESTION

i have all anodes for my engine /outdrive ,but i do not have mercathode system (probably was on boat previous to me buying ,idk) can someone please explain what a mercathode system is ,do i need it and where is it placed on motor or outdrive thanx any info is helpful or if someone has one for sale

In simple terms the Mercathode applies a low voltage current in the water to help repeal currents which will erode the drive. The Mercathode is only needed if the boat is in the water and connected to shore power. If its in the water and not connected to shore power then it is of no use
