Shift Cable Slide set screw

1983 MCM228 engine (serial#6285627) with sterndrive serial# 6289715. I am replacing my shift cable bellows and in trying to get the set screw on the shift slide off it broke. How do I proceed from here. I was hoping to re-use the shift slide and shift cable but I'm guessing the slide will also need replacing at this point.

I think for $9 it might be worth getting a new one 33981T 1
It might cost that much for drill bits.

if it is the small black setscrew in the aft side of the slide, there is no reason to remove it. The core will come out with the slide attached

My real question is how to disconnect the shift slide from the shift cable without destroying the shift cable. If I drill out the set screw will I destroy the cable or should I just try and crush the shift slide and disconnect the shift cable that way?

From inside the boat you remove the plastic slide and guide. From outside the boat you unscrew the shift cable and pull it out from the rear..Use something as a guide for the cable when you install it. A old cltrol cable SS core, or weed wacker string
