there are 2 styles of starters and two flywheel sizes.

originally the starters were direct drive, today they are PMGR (Permanent Magnet Gear Reduction).

most importantly, you need to order a starter for your flywheel ring gear size, 153 tooth or 168 tooth.

The 140 and "early" model 3.0 use the straight across bolt pattern starts 50-8M0090697
The newer 3.0 uses the staggered bolt pattern starter and is above serial number 0L097000. Don't know the year but would be after 1997

straight across pattern is for the 153 tooth flywheel and the staggered is for the 168 tooth flywheel.
