Hi guys,

I have a 1988 5.7 mercruiser 260 which needs a new starter motor, I acquired a new starter motor as a recplacement but the dimensions look quite different despite it being listed as compatible. I have attached a side by side photos of both however the casing around that starter pinion appears to be a slightly different shape so my question is, will the replacement fit my engine? I ask because the boat is a 3 hour round trip from home, so ideally want to avoid a wasted trip. Any guidance would be much appreciated- sorry if this is a silly question, but here in the UK there is far less knowledge about these motors!

the old starter motor on the left is a direct drive starter. the new one on the right is a PMGR (Permenant Magnet Gear Reduction). the PMGR is smaller, lighter, and more powerful

as long as both are staggered pattern, bolt it up
