simply changing bellows and gimbal should have no effect on the cable adjustments.

What is the motor you are working on?
The shift interrupter switch might be out of adjustment. When shifting, does the little metal "tongue" stay in the valley on the interrupter switch, or come out? The only thing removing the lower would really affect is shifting into gear, not stalling while trying to go into gear. The fact that adjusting the cable moved the problem from forward gear to reverse makes me think the shift interrupter isn't functioning correctly.
I would start from scratch and correctly adjust the shift cables, per the specs depending on what motor you have.

Anytime the shift interupter activates on land ,you have a lower cable problem or a binding issue. It worked fine before it was worked on ,so............................................

It the 3.0 mercruiser .its has this problem in water and out .and i miss spoke .before I adjusted it it worked in reverse just fine.it would go into forward and idle but the switch trips when I try to pick it up.now it the same problem but in reverse .witb the trottle in full reverse the switch is tripped all the way.i feel like the problem has something to do with haveing the lower drive off to do the bellows

Again thanks for the feed back

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,.... Sounds to me like ya need a new lower shift cable, as those are the classic symptoms of that issue,...

Not knowing your experiance level try it this way .
Remove the nut and plastic barrel from the shift control cable , leave the black end connected.
Remove the lower shift cable and Push the black plastic sleeve from the outdrive cable all the way in while turning the prop CCW untill it locks
Connect the plastic end and adjust the barrel end to fit, install cotter pin
Adjust plastic barrel of control cable to fit
Test run and report

I'm a collision repair specialist, know cars new to boats.did it step by step per the manual and vid on here seems pretty cut n dry.im guessing it needs a lower shift cable ,though I don't feel any binding by hand while someone turns the prop and I gothough the gears .i am 1/4in longer on the measurement for the remote control output

then your mis-adjusted, Does the roller center itself with the cables removed?

yes the roller is centered if cables r off.not sure if it matter but mine is the older style that sits on top of the motor not on the side .

Thanks again for all the replies
