Alpha One Shift Cable Replace

I'm having trouble running inner shift cable through outer. The cable is new and the outer has been fed up to motor. The inner goes in about 10 inches then stops. When I run the old inner through new outer it goes right in all the way to motor any suggestions? 1989 Wellcraft 210 Classic 5.0 Mercruiser Alpha One Gen 1

sounds like the new core is binding up some, most times you lay the cable as straight as possable then install the core , then route it.
