I'm a little confused. New boat to me. First oil change.

I have the manual and it states 4.5 quarts for all models. Then it states to go off the actual dipstick reading. It says to take a reading while at rest in the water 5 minutes after shut down to allow oil to drain into the pan. Am I waiting or the oil to drain from the filter?

When I changed the oil I put in just under 4.5 quarts, Before I read the manual, I took a reading while on the trailer a minute after shut down and I needed to add almost a full quart to bring it to the full line. I haven't taken a reading while on the water after waiting 5 minutes, so I guess when I do that I will know if I overfilled. I'm thinking I have just over 5 quarts in there now.

Does the 5.0 really only take 4.5 quarts including the filter?

Ayuh,.... I always dump in 4 quarts, test run it, shut it down, 'n top it off to the mark on the dipstick,...

It takes whatever it takes,...
