I've looked all around including this site and cant find a guide on removing a Mercruiser 3.0 I4
It LOOKS to be just the two bolts on the front mount, then at the rear it looks like you loosen those two bolts and it'll slide forward?

I'd have to take the outdrive out also I would think as the drive shaft goes into the block there.
Appreciate any advice, thanks. My block is still cracked and I have a replacement (hopefully)

You MUST remove the drive first. Don't even think about doing the job without removing the drive....

Took me about an hour by myself. The hardest part was getting the boat under the chain fall properly. Put it in forward and remove the drive like Achris said. Then just follow the steps in the manual.

Cheers

Make sure to align the engine to the gimbal bearing on reassembly. You will need an alignment tool.

Yep ill get that tool for sure, the only thing I cant see is how to raise or lower the engine on the mounts, there doesnt seem to be a way to adjust it other than tightening or loosening the mount bolts

At the front of the motor just under the nose of the engine water pump is the top adjusting nut.

Big nuts at B in your pic to align the engine. Loosen the bottom nut, adjust the top until engine alignment is good, tighten the bottom nut, then re-check alignment hasn't changed.

It's pretty easy, as long as you don't have a 6 year old helping you turn the nuts, 6 year olds don't grasp left and right too well....

Thanks very much! And you just eyeball it from the outside of the gimbal with the tool?

The search for a sub-$1000 engine continues

Got a chance for a new(used) engine.
he says its an 1987 3.0. im not really sure what mine is but maybe you can tell from the pics earlier in this thread.
Are there any fitment / compatability issues between years of the 80s? He said it was paired with an Alpha one Gen One like mine was
This is his:

Ayuh,.... A 12 volt battery, a few hand tools, 'n a compression tester can tell you quite alota info on the general overall health of the motor,...

With the above, a garden hose, 'n gas can, you could test Run it,...

How about a '92 3.0 I4?

I think my cracked engine is an 84?
I have the chance to buy an 87 model which looks identical and another possibility is a 1992 which is the same price ($800) but I think I may have problems with mounting and/or fitment with my alpha one gen 1 outdrive?
I've read that in 1991 some things changed and I may have to keep in the 80s is that correct? (complete engine swap not trying to do anything clever here)

Actually I think I found my answer. I need to keep pre 1992 to do an easy direct swap. Main seal being the biggest issue I would find and possible ignition.
