Hi there. SO had my 74 searay 220 out last weekend for the first time. Apart from the boat "biting" twice quite sharply (ok it was a bit rough) - I also noticed a bit of play on the steering.

After doing some research - I found the mod had been done (2 side holes). I removed the plastic plugs today and everything inside is brand new / shiny, but the bolts were a bit loose. I snugged them up by hand (silly torque wrench I rented was a really low strength one).

Anyway - I noticed about 3/4" max movement on the whale tail end with steering wheel not moving -

Next I steered all the way left and strap tied the stern drive to the U bolt to the side of the boat to keep it in place - I went to the helm and rotated the wheel a bit.. I can see into the back very well and the amount of play in the front was about 2 inches without the cable moving - I could feel the gears in the steering being worn.

Is there a way to adjust this front steering rack or do I need to replace it?

My control looks like this:
