Hello, I have a 1992 Mercruiser Bravo II that may be in need of a new cone clutch/gearset. It is very hard to shift into gear. The lower shift cable is new and the upper slides like butter when disconnected. I am going to remove the rear cover to check the detent ball and spring but am preparing myself for the worst. I can find new or rebuilt uppers but all say for use in post 1995 applications. What are the differences? The new uppers are much cheaper than rebuilding my current one. Any insight will be much appreciated.

Without getting into every year I'm going to discuss the issues with your year and interchangeability. The issue is in the housings and are identified in pics below

I'm sure Fun Times will have more info on this

Look for C5 for 91 and newer on upper case and C2 on lower cases

Thanks all dodge! Now I know for sure that the newer style upper will not fit my lower. I can't seem to find a new or rebuilt older style upper. Just as a ballpark, what do you think it might cost to fix my current drive if it is in fact the cone clutch causing my hard shift?
