Hi everyone, I have a 2001 5.7 that spent almost a year and a half without starting, now that is put together the carb is not priming when cold start. I need to pour a little gas in the carb to start it, once warm it has no problem starting. Any ideas on what it could be or what to trouble shoot??

athanks in advance and happy holidays

Dumb question, but are you using throttle only mode when cranking and give it a little gas?

Very normal. After sitting for more than a couple of days try cranking for 10 or 12 seconds. Then pause, pump the gas a couple of times, then set the throttle a bit above idle and crank it. Carburetors go dry through their vents. When you crank it cold, you refill the fuel supply.

so far nothing has worked, is there a rebuild kit for this mechanical pump?

Most likely it's the carb that needs to be rebuilt.

However, prior to that, list the steps you take to start it when it's cold. Every step.

I'm thinking it is leaking internally. Another basic question... is the choke closing when you pump throttle when cold? If you do not have much experience rebuilding carbs you may want to have it done by a pro or even just go with a new carb...or start watching as many you tube videos as you can find!

Besides verifying choke operation, suggest checking accelerator pump operation

If it does not work (squirt) when cold but does work after it has been running that will lend credence to the leaking down theory

It that photo of the carb while the engine is hot or cold?
Will that choke plate move at all by hand?
Judging by the paint of the carb screws, someone's been inside the carb at one time or another...It also appears just from the outside looking inwards, it's time someone opens the carb back up for a good cleaning again.

when engine is cold, pump throttle one time and then look to see if choke plate is open or closed. I agree that carb looks like it needs a good going over.

Also appears to be a crack in the cover at about the 4 o'clock position by the rusty screw head.
