If nobody gets back to you you could try your broom test again but use a 3' length of tubing this time. Garden hose would probably work.

Sounds like a rod knock, but loose flywheel been known to make knocking sounds.

thanks guys motor is clean no knocks I'm leaning heavily on the flywheel , at lower rpm around 1200 the starter vibrates a lot , not sure if this matters just observations

Whatever it is, stop running it till you figure it out. I've seen flywheels come off/explode. Usually on race type vehicles, but on the boat could sink ya or hurt ya badly.
Take off the starter, and see if there is any play in the flywheel.

It sounds metal on metal. if the flywheel is wobbling it will make it's own clearance. Drop the starter and see if it's skinned up at all. Sounds and vibrations don't always radiate exactly where they are coming from and a mechanics stethoscope gives better definition for me then some of the other methods and you can poke around a little better. No other previous anomaly with the engine such as a random squeal or fluctuating oil pressure?

little history , motor was locked up I got it freed up oil pressure 20 at 1200 rpm goes to around 38 at 3000, using poor mans stethoscope engine sounds great internally no knocks or squeels or ticks except the normal valve train ticks welt across oil pan boss "the block part" it had no noises on opposite side of the lifter tray no noises that's the reason I think its in the flywheel coupler , its a location I cant really check well , tomorrow I will try stethoscope but at idle with no load its really hard to hear it period

Loose/cracked flywheel can usually be heard at idle. A stuck bearing that's decided to eat itself, pin bore not so much.

What would random squeal and fluctuating oil pressure be?
A bearing slipping in it's shell will cause fluctuations on the gauge. When one spins it sounds like nails on a chalkboard. It can happen intermittently or steady. Once it happens, even it the noise stops, the tangs are gone that hold the bearings in place and the bearing will spin covering the oil feed hole.

yup makes me wonder why I couldn't here it at idle though only under a load , possible piston slap under load ?

Great. I have that symptom, looks like I have a tear down to do. Thanks.
