I have a 1983 MCM228R with a MC1 sterndrive. First thanks for the help on my previous post regarding difficulty rotating prop in FWD gear. I followed the link to adjust the shift cable. With adjustment complete the boat shifts properly. In FWD gear the prop rotates CW and the dog clutch engages when trying to rotate the prop CCW. In REVERSE the prop rotates CCW and the dog clutch engages when I try to rotate the prop CW. In neutral the prop is free spinning. The question I have is when the prop is rotated CW in FWD and CCW in REVERSE there is a noticeable clack-clack-clack ratcheting noise. Is this normal and how loud should this noise be?

Thanks for the response. It just seems strange to have a rapidly rotating gear contacting another piece of metal,
