Damage to Stern Drive

Hey guys,

So I was out in the bay today and hit what I'm assuming was a submerged rock. Wasn't going fast, maybe about 10mph, but still did some damage to the fin on the stern drive and the prop. Prop I can deal with, curious if the chunks out of the stern drive is something to be concerned with, or can I just file down the sharp edges and go boating. Checked all the rest of unit and everything else seems ok. Boat was running fine after.

Thanks
Dave

Looks fine. No worries. You mentioned something happened to the prop as well?

Yeah, brand new prop. Just put it on a couple of months ago. Rough edges on them now kind of similar to the stern drive, but without the big chunks out.. I think they will do for now, but gonna need another prop. I'm sure I won't be getting 100% performance out of it though.

3 minutes with a file and rattle can. Prop can be repaired by any number of prop shops

Thanks for the advice everyone! I still have the old prop I took off as well....going to bring that one to the local prop shop, and I can use the current one for time being. Depending how much they get at the shop, it might be cheaper to just get another new one.

Do I need to use a special type of marine paint or any decent paint will do?

If its a trailer boat then it won't matter a lot. Use some self etching primer and then spray rattle can.

If its kept in the water then a good cleaning, and some epoxy paint

Perfect. She is trailered this year but will be kept in the salt water next year, so I will go the epoxy paint route.

That is maybe an under $100 fix to have it professionally refinished and the missing pieces welded back in and made to look like nothing ever happened. If you don't care about the visual, I'd file it and not worry too much and consider yourself lucky the skeg seems to have done a decent job protecting the prop for the most part.

That looks as if you got a line wrapped around the prop under good power........

Ayuh,..... Ed's got a picture somewhere of just that,....

Only not 20lb fishin' line, but what appears to be 3/4" nylon anchor line,...
A HUGE ball, wound good, 'n Tight,....

As for the OP,... That ain't damage,... Clean it up, 'n go Boatin',..... ;)

That is what I meant Bondo. A line from tying up the boat. A rope is on shore for tying up a horse. A fishing line is just a fishing line....lol

The shaft is from a 200 Black Max that had a High5 prop.Prop was reduced to the size of a large orange and from the motors crankshaft end to the prop was destroyed.
I think you mean this one Bondo
