So just picked up a new to me 89 searay pachanga 22 with a 454 and a bravo 1. Boat has 420 hours on it. 3 season ago previous owner cracked block over winter so has the block changed be rings etc freshened up gve receipts. Boat runs Great idles awesome cruises good everything is good except for top speed. Few years back I had a doral Phazar same boat 454 but alpha 1 with a 23 pitch cleaver that boat hit 63mph GPS around 4300 rpm. This boat has 2 props: 23p quicksilver mirage and a 23p cleaver. No trim wot cleaver 3600 ish trim up to 3900 or so at 50mph GPS. Mirage has better hole shot 37 no trim climbing to 3950 trimmed 52ish mph. Any idea what's going on? From all my reading the pachanga should do at least 60mph bone stock and this boat is bone stock. Thanks in advance

Boats 2900 pounds fuel is fresh, compression is good, prop the 23 cleaver came off my Phazar. Hull is clean no polished though has anti fouling but clean.

Don't know what year the Phaser was but a 22 foot phaser for 1990 weight was 3700, the Pachanga weigh's 5200. Same motor less speed, seems reasonable to me. Now the Pachanga will be a smoother ride.

Also not your only turning 3950 rpm or there about. Boat tach's are not always accurate. that said, you can go down to a 21 and pick up hole shot and maybe a bit more sped "IF" your tach is accurate

The pachanga and the phaser are identical? Had them side by side it's listed 2900 pounds online maybe your thinking 27 pachanga? That may be the newer pachanga that manual

I guess you hafta go through the checklist. Stinks to do it all. But when you are done the engine will give you everything it's got.

There isn't something to focus on? This boat should do 60mph+ all day long has a bit of a bog when you floor it I noticed. Also it almost felt like it hesitated up top like it wanted to go but couldn't

Have you physically weighed the boat yet? Eliminate water log issues before you sink money into it. Take it to a truck scale and get that thing weighed so you know what you are dealing with.

+1

I haven't weighed my boat yet but I did recently compare some photos of it in the water with other photos and noticed my boat sits about 2 inches lower. I plan on pulling the foam and deck this winter.

Also, do the basic stuff like service it and tune up.

I would check compression to assure myself that the "refreshed" motor is really refreshed. check firing order to make sure you don't have two wires reversed. with engine running try pulling one wire off at a time to make sure each cyl is doing its share.

Haven't checked compression yet checked and adjusted timing it's 8 degree base advancing 22 degrees new cap and rotor, new water seperator. With 23 mirage it will do 53-54mph at 4250 rpm. Got a 21 cleaver coming to see if that will change anything. Want to check compression but I was running it for a while and it was too hot to pull the plugs. Took a close look at the block and you can tell the motor was take. Apart new gaskets fresh bolts etc

Just put on a 21 mirage changed from a 23 mirage and nothing changes still get 41-4200 rpm and now only able to hit 50 mph opposed to 53 ish with the 23

Assuming a 1.50 ratio drive:
21 pitch prop turn 4100 rpm getting 50 mph = 8.01 slip, turning 4200 rpm = 10.20 slip

As an example
23 pitch prop turn 4250 rpm getting 54 mph = 12.54 slip

That said, don't see how the rpm will increase (4200 to 4250) with a high pitch prop (21 to 23).

If the boat is as light as you say it is then the slip should be in the 8 percent range 6 percent rage.

Example:
My Rinker 21 pitch, 1.5 ratio drive, 4800 rpm, 60 mph is at 5.71 slip

What I'm getting at is there is something going on with the boat. Bone stock they do 62+ with 454 69 with a 350. Going down 2" pitch same prop I expected wot Rpm to go up roughly 400 and it didn't stayed the same

Have to know compression in order to diagnose engine health. I have never heard of an engine being too hot to pull spark plugs.

Poor compression along with the water logged foam that I suspect you have with the low rpm's and speed would do exactly what you are describing.

You know when the engine is hot and you don't have gloves bit hot on the hands to work in there and I highly doubt there is waterlogged foam this boat doesn't take on any water. Plus it would have to be really really heavy to slow it down I know people with 4000+ lb boats with 454s getting 60mph mine is a good 1000 lbs less
