Had a starter go bad on my 75 140 and switched it out for the new slim gear reduction starter from Mercury. Everything installed smooth but the electrical connections do not take the same size nuts as before. Currently dead in the water. I'm sure who ever else has upgraded has had to run into this same issue. Need correct nut size to pick up from store. Thanks

What is the part number of the new starter you bought?

Possibility that they'll be,
Merc item, part numbers,
2, 11-806949 NUT, Size (M8-1.5) ACT $2.10 $2.05 Quantity used 2
7, 11-400211 NUT, Size (M5) Stainless Steel ACT $2.40 Quantity used 2
8, 13-26996 LOCKWASHER, Size (#10) Stainless Steel ACT $0.84 $0.82 QT used 2
Do you have the rear starter support bracket? You may want to add one to avoid possible breakage trouble.
Also did the new starter come with new starter bolts?

Sierra still includes all the items necessary to change the starter

Found a sheet which offers parts list of the nuts and bolt sizes for starter part number 806965A4. If you enhance the photo size within the link, you can read the sizes. Did yours come with a list like the one linked below is offering?

I had a parts list but looked like it only had supplied parts. I can look again put pretty sure. Either way I am just going to pick up the M8-1.5. Doesn't look like Home Depot, Napa etc carry 1.5. They all stop at M8-1.25. Marine shop has the must for a couple bucks. Relay nuts were the M5 just like you were saying. I just feel like they should have supplied it like Sierra does. Oh well. I guess that's how Mercury makes there money. Plus side: starter is on and running
