I bought a new to me boat last year at the end of last season. Got a really good deal on it. Put it in the water only to find out it leaked...pretty bad..bad enough to pull it out in less than a week...cost me $1000 just to move it twice that same week.

Anyway,

I thought I bought a lemon with a leaky transom after I pulled the drive and didn't find a smoking gun. I decided to pull the motor to inspect further and found this mess (look at pic)

Anybody ever see this before?

Lucky my transom wood is intact

lots of times, the exaust shutter falls down from an overheat and the pin rattles around causing a leak, a drip. then the aluminum stats corroding and it becomes a bigger leak.

Can't find any other posts on this site pertaining to this topic...can't be that common..

Wondering if I should check my other pipe on the port side. It's not leaking but I don't want to find out mid season that the same s**ts happening to that one too

Y pipe corrosion does happen and the pin usually is the cause. other than the fact the pipe is always filled with water dosent help either

While I have the gantry and the lift set up I'm thinking about checking the other motor

At the cost of having to move the boat around so you can work on it each time....Yes it'll be cheaper to inspect the other one now. It's a 50/50 if it's as bad as the other one. When that pin falls it has been know to eventually puncture a hole in the lower section of the Y-pipe spraying water creating a bigger mess in the boat's engine compartment.

I've had to replace y-pipes twice on different boats. I've had very good luck buying used fresh water pipes off eBay. They looked like new, and a heckuva lot cheaper. Might at least be worth a look.

Ordered one off EBAY last night for $39.99 w/ free shipping....from a freshwater boat.

I am glad that was the source of the leak...sure beats a rotten transom...that's usually the outcome with these older boats that you have difficulty finding the leak in.

That small hole was good for about 6 gallons an hour. Enough for the bilge pump to keep up with. However, I gotta tell you though, I was loosing sleep waiting for my Hydraulic trailer guy to come and pull me out. I hooked up 2 backup bilge pumps just in case of any failures I would have a double redundancy.

Glad the leak was found and I can move on with preparing for the coming season. Hopefully this will be the only big problem.

Hi, Benny, I'm on the south shore... Babylon area. As it happens, some of my Power Squadron buds and I having been making the trek to Norwalk for the annual boat show, for a few years now. In August I'll be headed across the Sound in a 6-boat convoy to spend a couple nights in Mystic and a couple in Essex.

wooofff...long trek from the south shore.

I sold my old boat to a guy in Babylon. If you ever see a Regal ambassador 255 red on white tooling around your harbor that's probably my old boat.

The Carver Command bridge is a nice boat...love those Carvers...they are rock solid hulls

We're going in stages. Babylon to Greenport on the north fork for 4 nights, then Mystic, Essex, back to Riverhead on Long Island, then home. 10 nights. I like the Carver a lot. It isn't a blue water boat by any means, but it did fine on last year's voyage from Greenport to Martha's Vineyard and back. 6 each way hours in the Sound with 4-5 foot swells. It tracked great and never gave me any concern.

Better PM me if you want to discuss further. Thanks

Yea...not boat for offshore like most owners claim but I am a fair weather boater/fisherman who probably wont leave the sound anyway so all's good.

Maybe if the hull wasn't so flat in the aft it might fair better in rough seas. The bow has a pretty aggressive cut to it so it looks like it could take some weather.

I plan my days to avoid finding out.
