I am going to be replacing the lower shift cable on my boat this year.
First time attempting this project. I believe it's an MR1(?) drive (lower has the pin on the drive shaft).
Is it recommended to replace the upper shift lever also?

No reason to replace the lever unless it is worn or corroded up.

I would consider replacing the shift shaft bushings with the newer style if you haven't already.

Thanks for the tip Fishermark, that's the kinda info I'm looking for.
Are they easy to replace? Are they pressed in?
How about a P/N?

Thanks.......

Part number 23-805041A2

And yes - they are easy to replace - tap out the old and press in the new.

The new style sticks down into the exhaust cavity quite a ways. Look at the picture posted and compare to what you have.

I had a stalling issue when shifting that prompted me to change the lower shift cable (MC-1.) Didn't fix the issue. Still stalled, only not as much. I load and unload in a river current. So stalling when shifting is a real ***** of a problem. It's an old boat, 1976, so I figured nothing to loose changing the upper cable. Fixed the problem. Stalling when shifting is not "always" a lower shift cable issue.

By the way, I compared the new cable with the old and there was a noticeable difference in the drag of the inside wire.

rcmpvet has it right - it is an aid when installing the outdrive. It helps keeps things lined up. Not essential - I went years not using it. But once you have it you will be amazed at how much easier it is to install a drive. ESPECIALLY if you do it by yourself as I usually have to do.
