Sterndrive lifts when I put in reverse

I have have a 72 Mercruiser inline 6 sterndrive. When I put in reverse the drive lifts up in the water. When I took the boat out and put it on the trailer l could lift up the lower unit with my hands. I also notice when I'm lowering the drive it takes forever when I raise the drive up it goes up quickly please help thank you

Howdy

It's probably your reverse lock valve, it needs to be fixed or adjusted. When you shift into reverse the lock valve shuts off the hydraulic fluid from returning. Here is a link to the manual and how to adjust it

I would check the fluid level.sounds like it may be low which would contribute to your problems.Charlie
