shift cable timing on on my 4.3 L with a alpha 1 outdrive on a 1980's , 90's larson

was wondering if i can sucessfully time the shifting from forward to reverse with the boat out of the water and just using the water hose with muffs on.did a removal of engine and drive and just putting everything back together.thanks for any input or help

The shift cable can be Adjusted, Yes,....

It's well covered in the factory manual,....

You don't time the shift cable, you adjust it.
Look through the Mercruiser sticky notes at the top of the forum. Also go watch the videos of how to adjust the cable. It's completely documented. Then if you have trouble come back and ask us.

If you need to time the engine, that info is available too.

Do you mean timing of the neutral cutoff switch? The closest you can get it out of the water is to measure 6 inches from the center of the brass barrel to the center of the front hole. Adjust by turning the barrel. You do need the prop to be under load (in the water) in order to accurately adjust it.
