I'm in the process of purchasing a sea ray sundeck 290 that has a 496 HO 425 hp engine w/24 pitch prop, painted bottom, and dry weight is about 6044, cylinder compression is about 170 average and the engine has about 80 hours on it. I test drove the boat with 2 adults and 1 teenager and it topped out at 40 mph on the water in semi wavy conditions.

About a month ago I did a test drive on a 2006 270 sundeck with a 496 HO 425 hp engine w/26 pitch prop non-painted bottom, 140 hrs, weighs about 300 lbs less, had 3 adults and teen and it topped out at 54 mph with similar water conditions.

I understand that there are circumstances like painted bottom, pitch of prop, and weight of the boat (just to name a few) that would make a difference in speed, but 14mph seems extreme especially since the boat is not that much heavier.

Does anyone else own a 2008 sea ray sundeck w/496 HO or non-ho that would share their top speed and pitch of prop?

I just found out that the gear on the 270 is 2.00:1 and the 290 is 1.81:1. Both are 496 HO's and ran at 4900 rpm for the 270 and 4600 for the 290.
