Anyone ever use one of these engines in their Mercruiser?

There is not a Harmonic Balancer & Flywheel included. So there's a cost.
The only change (that I can see) would be to pull the steel freeze plugs and install brass.
Then just build up with marine-rated components.
Of course, this is a vortec engine. So you must have the correct belhousing and sterndrive parts.
But I plan to re-do everything in my boat. So I can just replace as needed.
For $2,000.00 delivered. How can you go wrong? New GM/Chevy 290 HP 350.

Thoughts?

Ayuh,..... None of that changes a thing,.... The SBC is the SBC up to the latest motors from the turn of the century,....

Throw a couple more grand at it, 'n jump to the HT-383 model,.... A Cheap way to go Extreme,...

Sure could be done ? Proly fresh water only because of the head gaskets not being S/S?? Change to the brass core plugs??. Now if you?re going from V-6 to V-8 You are going to have to buy !
  1. Intake and carb
  2. Marine Dist or V-8 control module if using a Merc thunderbolt system
  3. Exhaust manifolds
  4. Risers
  5. 90 elbows
  6. V-8 Y-Pipe
  7. Change your motor mounts to fit the V-8
  8. Flywheel and engine coupler
  9. Starter
  10. Harmonic balencer
  11. You?re outdrive should work by re ? propping to make up for the lost gear ratio

Bondo,

I thought about that stroker. But I am going to keep the Alpha 1 set up. So I am limited at 300HP.

So the back of the block is the same on vortec & non vortec engines eh?
Good to know!

Thanks.

Ayuh,..... Once upon a time, Mercruiser was puttin' 454, 330hp BBCs in front of Alpha 1s,.....

Granted, only a couple years, leadin' up the the debut of the Bravos,...

Just because you have available Horsepower, don't mean ya have to abuse the potential,..... ;)

Besides,.... with the SEI drives at 15 hundred a pop, Alpha 1s are replaceable,...

Bondo - Love the grease ad!
I want the experience of building the engine as well. Built a 350 when I was a yout. (what's a yout?)

81 Checkmate - I know, the parts list is big. But I have to spend money on something right?
I like the hunt and the weekend fiddling. But this will be a process over time.
Also, It will see some salt water. The SS head gaskets then huh?

Just trying to find the best way to do this project. I have seen new GM Marine long blocks for $3000.00 plus shipping.
Have done research. And it appears there are only a select few Authorized NEW GM Marine Engine Dealers.

This link happens to be one of them.

You do get more: Water Pump, Balancer & Flywheel. Rubber coated oil pan.
I assume SS head gaskets.
'Bout a grand more + 150.00 shipping

What is all this about:

This engine comes equipped with Flywheel set up for Inboard top mount starter application (ring gear towards stern)
We Do Not Change the Ring Gear

Thats proly for inboard only boat - not an I/O sterndrive.

Find a doner boat that had a V-8 set up for all the missing parts. That will save some cash and you will have some extra parts. Might just have a rebuildable motor in it. That way you can rebuild a motor like you want.
