73 Evinrude 85 hp lower unit installation problem

Hello.I am in desperate need of some help. I have a 1973 85 HP evinrude and am trying to reinstall the lower unit. I am having a great deal of problems with the water pump tubes. They seem to swing free and will not align. I know that the plastic 4 inch tubes are supposed to be guides to align them properly but they don't seem long enough to do the job. Is there something else that might be used that is a little longer to get the tubes to align? Any help would be appreciated.

Have the plastic tubes slid up the copper tubes ??
