Merc to OMC control conversion

Does anyone know if an older single lever mercury control can be used on an OMC product? I have access to a decent shape mercontrol for the price of FREE,but don't know if the engine side Connector can be switched.....any help would be great,as I would rather not drop the $150-175 that older faded out OMC controls go for.

....the Merc was a '68-50 hp, my motor is an '84- 30 hp Evi...

I believe you probably will find that the Merc works backwards from the Evinrude. Not only that, the attachments are different. You need an OMC control. Or a Morse if you insist on single lever. They are universal, but you need their cables and attachments.
