OMC control box

I recently purchased a 1996 Johnson 40 hp with an OMC control box. The previous owner said any key would work. I checked with the dealer to obtain the correct key and although it works, it will not go all the way into the switch. Is this normal or is there a piece missing between the key and switch.

Lakeside 1 , my friend has a 96 88hp i noticed his key sticks out a bit after looking around the boat i found a safety lanyard with a plastic horseshoe shaped clip that fits between the key and switch hope this helps. :joyous:

That helped. My control box has the kill switch lanyard as optional and after contacting the dealer I was informed the keys are made to stick out. Now I need to post a question on how to adjust the control lever.
