This project started as a simple impeller change on my 1964 Evinrude Fastwin 18 hp. Found water in gearcase opened up the gearcase and everything looked very good except the shift rod gasket and bushing (leak) and the seal/cover on the gearcase head assy. Decided to install reseal kit (ordered) and a few other PM parts. Questions: 1) Anything special about removing cap/seal from gearcase head assy; don't want nor need to replace whole unit. 2) Understand that 3M 847 sealant is recommended when reassembling the unit, can't find it around here so, will Permatex Black Extra work as well? 3) Should I apply sealant between the gearcase and lower leg? 4) When reassembling the gearcase/clamshell is the best way to reinstall the pivot pen.

This has been/continues to be a learning experience. I've read volumes and watch many videos and I have enjoyed it. Anyway, thanks to all who provided help with my previous post, this is a great site with great people...my compliments. JJ
