Bought a 14' fishing boat with a 1958 AD-12 Johnson outboard motor. Took it on a maiden voyage this past weekend and it idled great but no top end.(Makes a nice wake) What do I need to check? High speed needle valve setting?

Need more info. Could be something as easy as a wrong sized prop to serious engine trouble.

Classic story heard often. Yes, it could be the high speed needle setting, but I'd suspect you already tried that, right? Most likely it is running on one cylinder. They will idle just fine that way, but no power. Remove and ground one plug wire and see how it runs. Then do the same with the other one. If I guessed right, it will not make any difference with one grounded, but won't run at all with the other one grounded. That is the good one. Now, find out what is wrong with the other. Hint: ALL Johnsons of that age have cracked coils unless they have already been replaced. Get new ones here at iboats.
