I have a 1987 Evinrude 48 SPL. I am wanting to change out props to go with a different pitch, but Someone has put a different year lower unit on the engine and I am trying to find out what year/size so I can get the correct prop Apparently the shift rod operates backwards than my original lower due to the fact that I have to run a homemade linkage setup someone built, or the shifter on my remote operates backwards.

please click on pictures for description and additional info.

The shifter on the remote operates the same way.----Sounds like you have a lower unit off a 1974 model.----Those shifted the different way.-----Pictures of your shift linkages on the motor will help.

No Title

ok Racerone, the part on the left is the correct linkage for my engine, the one on the right is the homemade one that was on the engine when I bought it, the cable hooks to the top and the lever to the shift rod is on the bottom, so that when you shift, it moves it in the opposite direction that it was supposed to.

Not sure why folks do that kind of work.--Swapping the linkages from a 74 model is easier and much neater !!!!!
