I recently purchased a 40 hp 1967 Johnson Electromatic Seahorse with electric shift. We had to tear the gearcase apart to do some work and when we were putting it back together we ran into a question with the clutch. The clutch is essentially an electromagnet . When voltage is applied it grabs the spring on the gear. We were wondering what keeps the clutch from spinning on the shaft and breaking the wires. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The forward magnet is pressed into the housing and that keeps it from turning.------The rear magnet is held by the 4 screws to keep it from turning.--------The electromagnets exert a pull on the spring and do not actually have to make contact with the clutch spring !------These electramatic shift units are wonderfully simple and reliable.----You must use a TYPE-C gear oil or also called " premium blend " by BRP.-------You must make sure that the generator is in proper working condition !!
