I have a 1993 johnson 90hp that has a broken tilt trim unit. It has a good pump motor, but will not lift. The person I bought it from said that the piston needed to be rebuilt. I tried to jack the motor up to access the trim unit but it will only go up 3 or 4 inches. I am thinking that is not normal. Wouldn't it still be able to be jacked up all the way manually? Is something inside the unit jamming it?

You need to look for a hole near the bottom of the mounting bracket .Look through the hole and you should see a screw head/slot threaded . With a large flathead screwdriver turn c-clockwise several turns and that will allow you to lift the motor manually. You will need someone to tighten it while you are holding it up .Hopefully the cylinder is not totally frozen.Charlie
