56 Johnson 10 Parts Availability (lower unit)

I just finished going over (winter project) a 56 10 hp Johnson I've had for over 20 years and never really got it rolling. Right now with carb,ignition and water pump done its running like a clock. However, the lower unit shifting is messed. The reason it sat in the back of the shed for all those years. It will not shift into reverse and I need to open the lower unit. Before I open it I need to know if I can get parts. I've found a few sites that go that far back and list parts but they have very little and no lower unit parts I may need. Some even have nice diagrams of the motor and a listing of the parts but none available. I figure I'll need a seal kit and ??? inside. Anyone know where I can get what I need before I open it. It's a nice runner and I'd like to see this one on the water this summer.

For the seal kit try nymarine, or napa if you can get them to help you. Most all of the lower unit parts can still be had. Go to the antique outboard motor club web site, ask a member forum and those guys can fix you up with leads for everything you need. If you can't find something, send me a P M . I have a few 10's in the basement I can part out.

That motor has the 302495 prop shaft seal. I know of no seal kit that contains it. You need to order individual parts from an Evinrude dealer.

About a year ago I got a seal kit for my '56 Johnson 15 from HighTrim here on the iBoats forum. I believe it's the same one. Dunno if you can still get stuff from him, though. I see he hasn't posted since 2/24/15.
