Found a new toy.
Last run in 1998. 4 gallon tank clean and pretty rust free, I am amazed.
enjoy the pics.

Does that tilt lever "tang" look bent in pic #3?

No Title

Spider webs and dusty spots
Overall, there was a fine coating of oil on many of the surfaces.

Very nice looking motor, and a popular model. Yes, the tilt lock lever in #3 is bent. You probably can straighten it though. It should move up and down freely in the slot in the locked position, and stay in the unlocked position when you put it there. It is intended to be run in the locked position except when tilting or when running in skinny water when you know darn well you are going to hit something. Don't worry, if you are running at any speed in the locked position, it will automatically release and tilt up if you hit something.

Looks great. Are you going to go through it and run it or just look at it?

That is pretty close to the exact question that my better half asked.
Definately want to get it running but a small voice inside wants to take her apart from the ground up.
Might not be the best idea. Who knows? thats what toys are for.
Heck, I dont really have a boat to put her on (yet).

So 1958 seems to be the ONLY year that Johnson used a cursive typeset in their "branding" .
And what was the last year of the aluminum cowl? - before going to plastic/fiberglass?

Pretty sure 58 was the last year for the aluminum cowl. I know it was on 10, 15 & 18 hp,

I am like you in that I find the 1958 models attractive. I bought a 1958 7? a bunch of years back. That was the last year for that engine that started as an Evinrude in 1950. Cursive Johnson script is 58-only for the full line, but it was used in 1957 on the Golden Javelin 35 exclusively.

SO, The 1957 GOlden Javelin had a script nameplate - and
All the 58 Johnsons had script names on em

And the golden Javelin was to the Johnson big twin as was the Lark was to the Evinrude. Chromier.
