You must be running remote controls?? Because if you are tiller steering all you have to do is look at the exhaust relief. I suppose if you insist on a tell tale, probably easiest and with least damage would be to knock the expansion plug out of the top of the cylinder head and see if the hole would be compatible with a pipe thread for an elbow. I've never tried it, but that's where I would start.
