83 gt150 replacing recirc valves with later/different model?

Have a 83 gt 150, J150STLCTE. Going to have to replace the recirc valves (6) and the stock ones are expensive, cheapest I found so far is $20 each on ebay. I cant remember who on these boards mentioned it but I remember reading that some later model (updated) recirc valves would thread in, or even some evinrude ones? Original part # 0392988. Was also wondering if anyone just used a generic one way valve, as I think that's all they are minus the filter. Thanks for all responses

Hey Bosunsmate, Im still chasing an idle issue, and this is the direction some on this board have sent me. Im waiting on my omc manual, but reading online seems to tell me that the valves should only allow fuel to pass through one direction (into the intake) please correct me if Im wrong. Mine allow alcohol to pass freely either direction (using a syringe and tubing). Ive been looking for some cheap one way valves but cant find any that would fit. The ones I have are for bleeding brakes and much larger than these recircs. For the price of them I sure hope it makes a difference, even the tiny 1/16 fuel line is expensive! Thanks for looking

yep my time with them have shown them to be one way.
I know what you mean about the fuel line price, its stayed on my to do list for a long time because of that

I find it extremely coincidental all 6 are bad, but if you say so. I'd think any 1/8" NPT check valve would work. Btw I think you'll find that hose barb is 3/32.

Per your idle issue. Are you sure it was plumbed right to begin with? I think there's posed to be "Tees" in a couple of those lines on the V6. Have you tried just plugging them all and seeing what happens?

Posed to smooth out the motor at idle but personally I think they're overrated. I've had em rot and break off, fall/vibrate off, get accidentally knocked askew, etc. Never notice til next time I take the cowl off. Worse thing that happens is the plug in that cyl might have a lil more carbon on it?

I use the recirc lines cuz the fittings are there. But it's important to note these motors ran okay without em for several years.

For tubing check out your friendly local RC/Hobby shop. I got 3/32 Tygon for $1.29 a foot. Thought that was purty good?

V153 it's funny you asked if they were plumbed right to begin with, I'm not so sure they were. I don't have any t's in those lines, just in the ones running to and from primer pump and carbs. Going to take a close look at my manual when it gets here. Right now they have them from say intake side cyl 6 goes to cyl 1 up top, cyl 5 intake goes to cyl 2 up top, 4 to 3 and so on.. Oh and I haven't tried just plugging them, my wandering mind did toy with just routing the hoses coming off top of cyl to a small catch tank. I figured, if it's loading up and that extra fuel is causing problems, then why not try it without it? But I digress, I do not claim to know much about these motors. 2 or 4 stroke race bikes I know. most of the ppl on this board and others with this type motor say they need them

Those recuirt valves have to work as they're part of the carb calibration.

Thanks boobie, I trust your recommendations and I am going to go ahead and replace them all, and the hoses as well. It at least eliminates one possible cause of motor not wanting to idle. I WILL get this old girl purring if it kills me

I've repaired motors that other techs thought were carb problems but turned out to be just the recirt valves.

Those recirc hoses are small in diameter and not much air can go through them.--------Has a compression test been done ?--Have you looked at the reed valves ?-------Tested for good spark at the right time on all 6 plug leads ?

With all 6 allowing flow in both directions I'd have to ask if you're pressing too hard on the syringe?
My manual says to press lightly in one direction and to then pull back on the syringe to see if any air comes back.
It seems unlikely to have 6 'open' valves, even 6 blocked valves would be easier to believe.
Anyone ever broken one open to see what's inside?
