Looking at a 35 hp long shaft for sale with a 40 hp carb. Not sure why it is rigged that way. It seems like owner was trying to squeeze more out of it because it also has a dole fin attached. Will this affect low speed performance? I plan to check compression, gear oil etc. From what I have read putting bigger carbs on smaller motors just increases fuel consumption and hurts performance. Any thoughts/ opinions appreciated.

What you read is mostly true. But cannot be said for EVERY situation of year/model of motors. I don't know about yours.

My question would be where did they find a 40hp carb that would be compatible? As I recall all 40hp engines from about 1975-76 were all loop charged and have 2 carbs while the 35hp is still a single carb cross-flow design.

Don't know everything about Johnson's and Evinrude's that were built during that time period, but I have a 1976 40HP Johnson and it has one carb...

gm208 you are correct. I just looked at BRP and 1976 was the last year for the 40hp until 1983. Still not certain that those carbs will swap. from what I see on BRP the float bowls and linkages are completely different between the 1976 40hp and the 1976 35hp.

I missed out on that 40hp engine. Never owned on. Went from 1978 35hp and a 1982 35hp up to a 1983 60hp, 1975 50hp and a 1987 50hp.

There is no point in discussing this topic without a model # for the motor in question !!!!!

Ok thanks everyone, I'm going to stay away from it anyway, the seller did not advertise the year so all I have is a picture sorry for the lack of detail.

Might be a very smart move. Best of luck in your search for another one.
