First off I'm a new member but i have hung around here for awhile now because of all the great knowledge.

I have what I was told was a Johnson 25HP however I cannot find any model/serial number anywhere on the motor. Just trying to figure out if it is in fact a 25HP and what year it might be. It is electric start if that might help date it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's hard to tell since it's been painted, but due to the shape of the cowling, I'd guess mid to early 70's. The shape of the cowling looks similar to my '74 40 hp I used to have. Look around on the top of the block near the head and there should be a welsh plug. This should have the serial number stamped in it.

Thanks for the reply boatingcop. I have looked for the welsh plug to no avail. I'm just curious if it is in fact a 25hp. I was guessing 72-75ish also.

Judging strictly by the lower unit "bullet", the muff covers, the pan & the hood I would say it is a 1971 at the oldest or a 1976 at the newest. Model numbers would be something like 25E72 (you said it was electric start). If it was a factory-equipped electric start then the motor is a 72-76 as the earlier one were dealer-installed kits (except for the old 18s from the late 50s which also could be factory).

I believe I see the model/serial number tag in the last picture. It is on the side of the port side stern bracket, held on by two rivets. Carefully remove the funky camouflage paint from it and the mystery will be over.

Thanks for all the replies.

I also thought the plate was painted over but it is no longer there and am having no luck finding anything under the cowl.

I'll have to take a look at the coil set up.

Agreed , actual year does not matter as parts were essentially the same year after year.

Actually, 1974-1976. 1973 did not have external coils, and 1977 had Mag CD ignition.

Shop evinrude and here at iboats list the same coils from 73 to 76 for 25hp. I believe the 40hp was from 74 to 76.
