lower unit question

HELP!!
I have both a 1952 1958 3 h.p. Evinrude Litwin. In the process of changing the impeller I removed the driveshaft from the lower unit, then when I turned the lower unit upside down the oil came out. My question is should any oil come out of the lower unit when it is turned upside down weather the driveshaft is in it or not, does the oil coming out mean the driveshaft seal is bad.

With the shaft removed oil will pour out through that open hole.------With shaft installed it should not leak.

be carefull not to damage the seal when putting the ds back into the gearcase

I can see it coming.....your next question will be how do you get the shaft back in. The answer is you have to hold the gearcase so the drive shaft is horizontal and prop shaft pointing up. Carefully insert the shaft while wiggling the prop back and forth slightly.
