My 1988 150hp V6 Evinrude outboard engine has a faulty four wire CDI water cooled rectifier/regulator unit. The stator of this engine is rated at 35 amps. The cost of a new CDI rectifier/regulator is about $200. Another boat owner has suggested that I replace the faulty unit with two Mercury Mariner 6 wire rectifier regulators 815279-3 wired in parallel. The cost of these two units is about $80. I would like to know if anyone is running an Evinrude engine that has the Mercury Mariner rectifier regulators installed. Any input will be appreciated.

My opinion - put the one that belongs back on the motor. Check Ebay or the marine salvage yards for used parts.

I like your advice. Have made arrangements to have the correct replacement regulator/rectifier installed.
