Just acquired an good running 1975 Evinrude 135hp. had to tear apart and clean the PTT motor because it had been sitting for 4 years and was seized up. got the motor back together and running good and when I went to check the fluid noticed it was heavy and appeared to be lower unit gear oil. is this the proper fluid for this? I know it seems to be struggling and the wires are getting pretty warm. all the wiring needs to be re-done because of a terrible job the previous owner did of wiring. lots of corrosion, exposed copper and tape everywhere. But I think the heavy oil is putting too much load on it also. Thoughts?

Bombardier makes a power trim and tilt fluid. In 10 ounce tubes. It's high pressure, non-foaming hydraulic oil. Red and somewhat thin. I'd pull the steel lines off the unit and try to drain the incorrect fluid out and replace it. You may have to completely flush it a few times to get the old stuff cleaned out. I would not run the motor when there is no oil in the system.
