1970 Evinrude 18 hp -> How do I replace the water pump cooling system?

When I idle my motor in a barrel I don't really see any weep holes to indicate that the water pump is working but not sure if I am looking in the right areas. Maybe it just needs cleaning?? If so what should I do?

If anyone has info, links, or would like to explain how to do this job. I have tools and have worked on cars before BUT never on an outboard so I am seeking some advice. Also what books should I get on old outboard repairs?
