my engine is using a lot of oil. runs great at planing speed and does not smoke but at slow speeds it smokes. i would estimate i went 12 miles and i used a gallon of oil. i can't afford the cost of oil 20 dollars a gallon. any suggestions on where to start?

I would start by replacing all of the hoses and clamps (do NOT use standard tie wraps; they WILL cause air leaks). While you are at it, remove the tank and clean it.

If you are using the VRO oil injection, then the issue is likely an air leak into the gasoline part of the fuel supply. It could be the gas line, the fuel pickup clamp, any joints in the fuel line or the main strainer on the motor. If the VRO is disabled, it is something else.
