Does anyone out there know how to and where to disconnect shift linkage on a 1973 85 horse evinrude lower unit. I have all bolts out and it has dropped about 1/8th inch but will go no further, Thanks in advance

There is a screw that connects the shift rod below your carbs.

sealegs
remove the cowling, and have someone shift it into gear. You will see the shift linkage connection just below the carbs.Remove the screw and it should drop the whole lower unit. It seemed easier to have it in reverse to access the screw.

Good Luck

The '73 motors have hydraulically assisted shifting and do not have the screw mentioned in the above posts, that was for some '77 and later motors. On the starboard side by the shift linkage is a bellcrank fastened by a 5/8" headed bolt. Remove it and separate the halves, which have a pin and a hole on the shift shaft end. Then remove the gearcase.
