to test my johnsons ignition system the service manuals tells me to use a s-80 neon tester,, what is this, will a test light do the same thing? can you make one of these neon testers?? thanks much
I am not sure if you could make one or not ,but it probably can be done . No a test light will not do the same thing . My best recomendation would be to buy a neon tester .
Go down to radio shack and pick up a couple of neon bulbs. Doesn't matter if they have the resistor in one lead or not.

Now hold a bulb by one lead and as you have the other lead bent away from you, get the loose lead close to the spark plug you want to check while it's running. It will flicker with each pulse just by the residual plug wire leakage through the bulb and to your finger and thumb for ground.

Champion sparkplugs used to sell a neon tester that looked like a ball point pen.
