I have a 1976 70 HP Johnson outboard, model 70EL76D.
The 2 plastic screens that filter incoming water to the lower unit are broken out. What do I do? If I try to replace them will I spend lots of money replacing seals also?
No problems on the motor exept screens.

Re: Water Intake Screen

You're going to have to drop the lower gear case and remove the waterpump to get at the screen. You should do it before the pieces of screen that were pulled into the passages cause you grief.

*what an optimum time to replace and/or inspect the water pump :)

Re: Water Intake Screen

Well I got the new screen in, not too hard. No seals needed. Only tough part was I had to remove the plate the water pump sits on to get the new screen installed. There are 4 thru holes in it that were just the right size to be tapped at 5/16-24, then I was able to alternately tighten 2 bolts and work the plate off.
