I have a new prop shaft seal for my 1962 28hp outboard of which I have a few questions. It’s a bit different from the original and I’m hoping that pressing it into the housing as per the photo is the correct orientation. Also the seal is a lot thinner than the original and was wondering if you press it flush with the housing or do you press it as far down into the housing as possible?

Re: Prop shaft seal question

The spring goes to the inside. Double check part number. There are usually two seals. Interior one keeps oil in and exterior one keeps water out. That is for modern engines anyways. The exterior one also has a "line" cutter on it often.
