18 Hp Evinrude Fastwin - Carbon Lower Crank Seal

I am re-doing the carbon seal assembly on my fastwin. In my haste I didn't pay attention to the direction of the seal when I took it out. Do the notches go towards the crankshaft bearing or towards the spring?

One side is flat with the notches, the other has a raised lip and no notches. It seems to me like the flat side goes towards the spring.

The raised lip is the sealing surface that goes up (against the bearing). The spring retaining washer goes against the notched side. Actually, the notches are non-functional.
