Hey Guys.
Have a question regarding my 1978 70 hp Evinrude 70879c..
On the gearbox near the water intake, there is a hex head screw.
Mine has been butchered by the former owner, and I am wondering
what its purpose is..
Any info is appreciated
Gibb
Its purpose is to hold in part of the gear system.
Its a real bad move to remove it.
Maybe the former owner butchered it so could never be removed easily by mistake. If you do undo it you often need to pull out the whole prop shaft and bits and pieices to fix it back up.
That screw prevents the bearing above the pinion gear from moving.-----If it were good you can remove it and reinstall it without any worries at all.----Since the screw is in there it is doing it's job and there is no need to worry about a thing !!!
Thanks for the fast reply.
Things have always felt a lil sloppy in the gears so maybe that's why..
oh well. boats in bits anyway and the motor is hanging by a rope from a rafter,
so i may as well pull it apart and rebuild the whole thing.
