85 hp evinrude outboard motor 1973 and 1974

Does anyone know if the 1973 and 1974 85 hp evinrudes are basically the same motor?

They are basically the same. A lot of parts are same part numbers. What are you trying to do?

I believe many internal engine parts are different.----Carburetors / ignition / gearcase components are the same.

Some big differences in the rotating assemblies between these years. Both engines should be the same displacement. (Around) 92 cubic inches. They achieve that differently. The connecting rods are a different length. That means the piston pin location is also a different height in the piston skirt. Those parts are not interchangeable.

The '73 was the odd ball.

I was told the 74 has a shift assist in the lower unit, the 73 is mechanical. Need the correct gearcase oil for the 74.

The lower units are exactly the same !!!!

just look to see if you have a shiftshaft or not

Shift shafts, upper linkage and lower units are all the same !!

Thanks Boobie. I have as 85ESL73M and would not consider parts from another year model if I didn't compare part numbers. OP...what are you trying to do with these motors??
