140 evinrude sport

I have a 140 evinrude sport, guessing early 80's and am in need of a new prop, what size do I need? Thanks

Back when that engine was produced, engines came with a prop in the box. Boats were much smaller then. It would have come with a 21 pitch aluminum. If it did not work optimally on the original owner's boat, the dealer would exchange it for the correct one. Today engines don't come with props due to the wide variance in types of boats: deck boats, pontoons, fishing boats, etc. So it's really impossible to recommend one. So your prop will be by trial and error. You will want to settle on a prop that will ultimately let the engine rev to 5500-5600 at wide open throttle.

Thanks, I went with a 19 pitch the prop shop said that's what he recommend for my 17ft runabout. Also the motor runs great on muffs but the first time I put it in the water it was really slow at full throttle the Rpms were about 3-3500, but 6,000 on the muffs I'm hoping this is do to a spun hub on the 21pitch prop I removed does this sound possible? Thanks again

Keep on running it at 6000 rpm on the muffs and you'll have more than prop problems.

That motor will sound great on the hose , they all do.------It will run to 6000 RPM on 2 cylinders , so that means nothing.--A spun hub will allow the motor to wind up over the 3500 RPM that you are reporting !!

Check your compression and spark on all cylinders

A 19 pitch prop is a common size. So, with the 19 pitch prop on the engine, a light load of fuel and running at full trim: what are your max rpm's at WOT?

Compression showed 110 on 3 cyl and 100 on the 4th, idk what the wot is with the 19 pitch yet but the 21 was showing 3-3500
